NPRA is regarded as one of the oldest border agencies issuing travel document and granting citizenship in the Arabian Gulf. It is also the earliest institution established before the emergence of the modern state of Bahrain. In 1928, the first directorate of immigration and passports was established in Bahrain with the first travel document issued in 1929. Its achievements since then have been remarkable and historical. It has been vital in creating and developing rules and regulations along with the enactment of laws for travel documents, passports, immigration and naturalization, and developing a system for work and travel procedures intended for citizens and expatriates alike.
